oh my god, really? they actually called the kittens that? jesus h christ

I remember this one time someone made a literal reference to something that happened, for instance using “tar babies” for a couple of baby cats covered in tar, and lots of people screamed racism just to scream racism. That was a good day.

…because “tar baby” has no racial connotation at all. I mean, it’s not like they could’ve called the kittens “tar kittens.” Am I right?????

"That is to say, the sounds weren’t a sign that data was being transferred: they were the data being transferred. This noise was the analog world being bridged by the digital. If you are old enough to remember it, you still knew a world that was analog-first."

Alexis Madrigal - The Mechanics and Meaning of That Ol’ Dial-Up Modem Sound (via thisistheverge)

This brought back lovely memories of the mid-90s and our first old computer. I remember this sound as the one of anticipation. In fact, I think if I could translate into sound that buzzy, anxious feeling I get before something exciting, this would be it. The best part of this, for me, is right at the top. Madrigal types out a version of the dial-up modem sound in English for us:

Someone is trying to make the argument that America is the most oppressive, most genocidal, most imperialistic country ever.

Sources or it didn’t happen.

I can’t think of a single example where we’ve been imperialist or genocidal.

“sources or it didn’t happen”?

Do you live under a rock??

Again: reasonable conservative Tumblrs just do not exist. I suppose an argument could be made that America is not THE MOST oppressive, genocidal or imperialistic country in the world (Europe has done a pretty bang-up job on those fronts too), but this person can’t think of a SINGLE EXAMPLE of a time America has been shitty? For real???

"The destruction of the ‘Indians’ of the Americas was, far and away, the most massive act of genocide in the history of the world. That is why, as one historian aptly has said, far from the heroic and romantic heraldry that customarily is used to symbolize the European settlement of the Americas, the emblem most congruent with reality would be a pyramid of skulls."
